| Course objective : | This course includes a general introduction to the history of prehistoric research and focuses on the objectives, methods and philosophy of archaeological research. Following a chronological perspective, the course begins with human origins and the different factors (environmental, anatomic, technological, cultural) that influenced human evolution. The course then develops the study of the different hunter-gatherer societies during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. |

| Organization : | Duration and period: 30h + 60h practical work + 3 days of excursions and fieldwork, 1st and 2nd terms.
Classroom and schedule: Auditorium A4/S100 (building A4), Monday, 9-10 am. |

| Assessment : | Oral examination (exam session in June). An optional mid-term written multiple-choice exam is proposed in January; an individual written work is required at Easter; the knowledge acquired during the practical exercises is also evaluated. These three estimations are included in the final note, which remains mainly based on the result of the oral examination. |
