Course contents :  History of Prehistory - Theory and Method - Primatology - The Australopithecines - Lower Palaeolithic - Middle Palaeolithic - Upper Palaeolithic - Palaeolithic Art - Mesolithic
Course objective :  This course includes a general introduction to the history of prehistoric research and focuses on the objectives, methods and philosophy of archaeological research. Following a chronological perspective, the course begins with human origins and the different factors (environmental, anatomic, technological, cultural) that influenced human evolution. The course then develops the study of the different hunter-gatherer societies during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods.
Prerequisites :  None.
Organization :  Duration and period: 30h, 1st and 2nd terms.

Classroom and schedule: Auditorium A4/S100 (building A4), Monday, 9-10 am.
Written notes :  Reference book: Otte, La préhistoire, Bruxelles : De Boeck, 1999 (with contributions by D. Vialou and P. Plumet). A bibliography of the major reference works is distributed at the beginning of the year.
Assessment :  Oral examination (exam session in June). An optional mid-term written multiple-choice exam is given in January.
