| Course contents : | This seminar is an initiation to scientific research. It aims at arousing student's interest to use scientific research for the written work at the end of his/her studies, to introduce him/her to scientific communication and promote scientific research.
Beyond this academic approach, the competences developed are useful for every entrepreneur, administrator, executive or decision-maker, and more generally for every social actor who has to make choices and decisions.
The seminar structures around three key skills, to validate at the end of the year:
- text analysis;
- writing of a scientific synthesis;
- use of bibliographical references.

| Course objective : | Session 1. Introducing scientific research (competence level C1)
- Understand the concept of "scientific research" and know the theoretical bases
Session 2. Using bibliographical databases and documentary research tools (competence levels C1 and P2)
- Know the theoretical bases in documentary research
- Differentiate between document research and document location and have a global view on the available tools in management and their utility
- Use the bibliographical databases in management to research papers
- Locate a specific paper with Source or the other available tools
- Recognize a scientific paper (scientificity criteria)
Session 3. Text understanding and summary techniques (competence levels C3 and P3)
- Know the general principles of a summary and the difference between summarizing and synthesizing
- Use the speed reading and the analytical reading techniques
- Be efficient when taking notes
- Summarize a written or oral document (be concise, efficient and precise)
Session 4. Document analysis, synthesis and critical spirit (competence levels C3 and P3)
- Analyze a document and be able to identify the different elements of the structure in a scientific paper
- Know the principles of a literature review and the difference between a synthesis by author vs. by concept
- Make a matrix "concepts-authors"
Session 5. Critical synthesis and bibliographical norms in management (competence levels P3 and C4)
- Write a critical synthesis
- Be critical (put into context)
- Respect the bibliographical norms in management in terms of citations and references (avoid plagiarism)

| Workshops : | The students have to do short practical exercices during the seminar (individually or by groups):

- Critical synthesis of different scientific papers, with bibliographical norms

| Organization : | The seminar is organized in 5 3-hour sessions (15h of theoretical course):
- Session 1. Introducing scientific research
- Session 2. Using bibliographical databases and research tools
- Session 3. Text understanding and summary techniques
- Session 4. Document analysis, synthesis and critical spirit
- Session 5. Critical synthesis and bibliographical norms in management
The students have to prepare short practical exercices before each session (15h of practical exercices).
A session of questions-answers will be planned before the final exam. |

| Written notes : | The PowerPoint presentations and other supporting documents will be available on Lola. |
 |
| Assessment : | Students are evaluated through a final exam, comprising theoretical questions on the content studied in class, as well as practical exercices, similar to those done during the seminar.
The final grade is divided as follows. On a total of 100%:
- Theoretical part: 30%
- Practical part: 70%
