| Course contents : | In the first part of the course, we look at changes at the organisational level, considering change in strategy, culture and structure.
In the second part of the course, we concentrate on the perspective of individuals in organisations undergoing major changes. The focus here is on how to deal with resistance to change from two points of view: a more traditional side related to the change agent, and an alternative angle referred to the change implementers. |

| Course objective : | This course aims to clarify how important is change management for today's business organisations. We will examine the main theories and methods through the use of case studies and exercises.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
understand the complexity of change management but also its key function for the life of business organisations;
know the major theories and models about change management and resistance to change;
identify the critical elements and roles for ensuring an effective management of change. |

| Organization : | The course is organised in 6 sessions of 4 hours each. The course contents will be developed according to the subsequent scheme:
Session 1:
Introduction to change management. The importance of changing. The object of changes. 5 main theories on change management.
Session 2:
Culture and change. Power, politics and change. The importance of informal networks.
Session 3:
Change in strategy, change in structure. A methodology for changing structure from the bottom.
Session 4:
Resistance to change (RTC). The origin of the debate on RTC. Resistance to technical and organisational change. The negative perception on resistance to change.
Session 5:
Different characterisation of RTC: political and social class conflict, constructive counterbalance, manifestation of difficulties or unavoidable behavioural response. Six issues in the analysis of RTC.
Session 6:
A model for RTC detecting and forecasting the individual level of RTC. Analysis of a case study. |
