Holder(s) :  Serge Brouyère
Language :  French language
Course contents :
  • Soil and groundwater pollution sources contaminant types, source types...).
  • Natural and modified groundwater quality. Contaminant dispersion and attenuation in soils and groundwater.
  • Legal context and methodologies for soil and groundwater protection. Risk assessment and management of contaminated soils and groundwater.
  • Investigation techniques for soil and groundwater pollution.
  • Remediation techniques (essentially in situ).
  • Additional seminars and talks by experts and professionals in the field.
Course objective :  Elementary knowledge for a meaningful analysis of a problem of soil or groundwater pollution (problem description and conceptualisation, decision making...).

Knowledge on mechanisms for contaminant mobility and attenuation, on risk assessment and management, on site characterization and remediation.
Prerequisites :  It is preferable to have prerequisite in hydrogeology. Knowldege on soil sciences, chemistry and groundwater flow and transport modelling is an advantage but not required.
Workshops :  Practical works are organised during most courses on theoretical examples and simplidied case studies. A case study has also to be performed on sa simplified yet realistic case study, by groups of 3 to 4 students.
Organization :  First semester
