Holder(s) :  Stoyan Gaydardzhiev
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The course is dealing with the growing importance of providing secondary resources coming from the so-called "urban mines". The course covers the following aspects:

Sources and categories of solid wastes. Collection schemes. Application of unit operations known from the mineral processing technology in the field of separation and recycling of solid wastes (industrial, post-consumer etc.). Presentation of specific separation units developed for waste processing industry (shredder, ballistic separators, pneumatic tables, Eddie current separators, optical and X Ray sorters,...). Options for final use of the different components derived from waste processing - valorisation in terms of energy and materials. Principle flow sheets used for recycling of some important groups of industrial wastes (batteries, WEEE, ELV). Principle routes for treatment of polluted soils.
Course objective :  By attending the course students will get knowledge about what the recycling industry could learn from the mineral processing industry. The students will be able to understand the basics steps during elaboration of solid waste recycling/treatment technologies and the basic aspects of energetic valorization of municipal solid wastes.
Prerequisites :  It is advisable that the students dispose basic knowledge regarding the separation methods for solid materials.
Workshops :  If possible laboratory experiments for separation of soild wastes (plastics, glass, scraps) will be organised. Industrial site visits for enterprises active in the area of recycling of metallic wastes are on the agenda.
Organization :  Oral lectures, site visits and lab works (with report from the visits/labs required)
Written notes :  The lecture material will be availabe in pdf form at the WebCT platform.
