Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Geology, Research Focus, 1st yearToute l'année4
Master in Geological SciencesToute l'année4
Holder(s) :  Nathalie Fagel
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The course is organised in 7 sections
  • 1. Introduction
  • 2. Climate system
  • 3. Dating methods
  • 4. Climate archives
  • 5. Climate changes: (a) since the Earth's formation, (b) the Quaternary
  • 6. Factors of climate changes
  • 7. Climate predictions
Course objective :  The aims are:

  • to explain rthe paleoclimate approach. What are the available geological tools or archive? What are the most appropriate dating methods? How accurate are the proposed climate reconstructions?
  • To illustrate the natural climate variability over different timescales, since the Earth's formation until the recent climate changes
  • to identify the driving factors of climate changes. The influence of human activities will be also discussed through IPCC (Intergovernment Panel for Cimate Change) predictions for the next century climate.
Prerequisites :  None. The course will be adapted taking into account the basic formation and/or knowlegdes of the audience
Workshops :  Individual and collective exercices (calibration of radiocarbon age and age model establishment, calculation of transfert function, discussion of scientific papers). Visits of specific laboratories working on paleoclimate archives at ULg and/or in others universities
Organization :  First semester, 10 x 3h/ week. Lectures followed by exercises.
Written notes :  Copy of figures and tables presented during lectures.
Assessment :  Theory (50% final evaluation)- individual oral examination (15 min. + preparation)- Comments on figures and/or tables from the lectures.
