- General overview of the mining sector
- Definitions of the notions of ore, resources, reserves (JORC Code)
- Consumer and production statistics of the main resources
General concepts of metal deposit exploration
- Source and mobilisation of metals in the environment
- Mineralising fluids
- Migration of fluids and methods of deposit
Gitology
- Deposits of magmatic origin
- (Ortho)hydrothermal deposits associated with granitoids
- Deposits in a sedimentary/evaporitic context
- Deposits in a detritic context
- Modified deposits
- Deposits linked to metasomatism, metamorphism, diagenesis |

| Course objective : | 1) To have a global vision of the mining industry and the challenges of sustainable development in this domain.
2) To be familiar with the geopolitical stakes concerning the distribution of mineral resources
3) To understand the mechanisms regarding transport and the concentration of metals in the environment.
4) To establish a link between the typology of the deposits and their mining methods
5) To be familiar with the basic mineralogy of the main ores and to understand its impact on concentration procedures and on the environment
6) To be familiar with the main uses of the metals and the possibilities for their substitution. |

| Prerequisites : | General geology, mineralogy (basic course) |
|
| Workshops : | Manipulation of macroscopic ore samples from different sources. Complementary microscopic observations in reflected light.
Compilation of documents and websites of mining companies and international organisations. |
|
| Organization : | Second quadrimester - Wednesday AM
The theoretical classes are taught in two-hour modules.
Each theoretical class is followed by two hours of practical work allowing samples and documents relating to the class to be consulted. |
