GEOG0626-1  Theory of Errors
Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in geographical sciences, general orientation, 3rd yearSecond semester3
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Geographical Sciences, Geomatics and Geometrology orientationSecond semester3
Holder(s) :  René Warnant
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The first part of the course is dedicated to the theory of errors. The basic concepts of the theory of errors and of the least square method are presented. Then, the course studies the notion of error propagation and shows how the concept of variance-covariance matrix (or cofactors) allows to derive the equations giving the maximum acceptable error and the optimal value of the unknown parameters. This theory is applied to practical problems in topography and in GNSS.
Course objective :  The course gives an introduction to the theory of errors and to the least square adjustment method. The goal is to give students the basic tools to solve practical problems mainly in topography (optimal value of a measured or a computed parameter, propagation of errors, maximum acceptable error, ...).
Prerequisites :  Basic course of mathematics (mainly statistics and matrix algebra).
Workshops :  Practical work is given in 6 sessions of 2h30. During these sessions, practical problems (mainly in topography) will be solved using theory of errors and least squares.
Organization :  The course (theory) is divided in 6 lectures of 2h30 (one lecture per week during the second semester).
Written notes :  Lecture notes are available.
Assessment :  The evaluation consists in a written exam on:

- the material seen during the theoretical lectures;

- practical problems (similar to the one solved during practical work sessions) to be solved using the theory of errors and least squares.
