| GEOG0217-1 | Hydrology
| Duration : | 15h Th, 10h Pr, 1d FW |
| Credits/ECTS : |
| Holder(s) : | François Petit |
| Language : | French language |
| Course contents : | The first part of this course considers the characteristics of the catchments, soil water and groundwater (storage and movement), factors affecting the runoff (total volume, distribution in time), particularly as a function of urbanization and land-use, rainfall runoff relationships, recurrence interval of extreme events, different techniques of food protection, rivers regime in relation with morphoclimatic components.
The second part of the course relates to channel-beds morphology and rivers dynamics in relation to morphogenetic discharges and hydrological processes. |
| Course objective : | The purpose of the course is first of all to analyze the different components of the catchments hydrological cycle, by considering for each of them the methods of measurements, the specific data treatments, the regional components and the modifications inducted by human action. The second part relates more specific problems about morphology and dynamics of the rivers in relation to hydrological regime, about the treatments of the discharges and about the cartography of flooded areas. |
| Prerequisites : | Course of geomorphology and climatology |
| Workshops : | Practical works consist of exercises relating to the evaluation of the different physiographic parameters specific to the catchments, on calculations of the extreme events (Law of Gumbel), on the estimation of groundwater reserve using the curve of depletion (Law of Maillet) and application of the Thornthwaite's model.
The field works relate to measures of discharge and analyzes of processes concerning rivers dynamics (impacts of dams on the river morphology, impacts of rivers straightening and bank protections...). |
| Organization : | The course comprises the following chapters: - The concept of the catchments - The hydrological cycle end the hydrological equation - Components of Runoff - Soil water and Groundwater - Morphology and dynamics of rivers |
