| Course contents : | The study of pedology as understood in this course considers the relationships between geology, relief, and soils. However, we must first define the theoretical foundations of pedology.
The theoretical course is divided into three parts:
The first part deals with soil compnents, in particular clays and humus.
The second part is devoted to studying physical and chemical soil properties, such as structure, water properties, ion sorption and exchange, and their practical consequences.
The third part considers soil formation and soil classification; in this part the main soils of the world are described. Soil formation is introduced with Jenny's equation and is studied in the sequence: factors (r) processes (r) characteristics (soil horizons and soil profiles).
Workshops are devoted to exercices in applied soil science; concepts of soil mapping and evaluation are illustrated by the reading and interpretation of the soil map of Belgium and also by two field trips (half-day) within the campus.
A day trip to the Belgian loamy region provides concrete illustrations for notions of profiles and catena. |

| Course objective : | Soil is an interface that is particularly important in issues of environment and land use planning. It's crucial to study this interface and its variability (in space and time) in the context of sustainable management of soil resources, especially facing current issues such as soil erosion or soil contamination. |
