| Credits/ECTS : |
| Holder(s) : | François Petit |
| Language : | French language |
| Course contents : | 1) Rivers: the hydraulics and mechanics of open channel flow, sediment transport processes, falls and bedrock-channels; channel gradient and the long profile, incised and entrenched meanders; meandering river channels and floodplains, braided and anastomosed channels, alluvial fan model and deltas; river channel changes : adjustments of equilibrium, terraces; captures; networks and drainage patterns, antecedent rivers, surimposed rivers
2) Mass movements and hillslopes processes: rockfall avalanche, landslides, rock glacier, mudflow, creep and solifluction; rainsplash, sheet-wash and rill formation, the equation of Wischmeier.
3) Karst geomorphology and hydrology : dissolution chemical of the karst rocks, karst hydrology and karst drainage system, cave system and cave interior deposits, karst landform and landscape, the influence of climate on karst development.
4) The components of landforms, great units of the relief, peneplanation, peneplains in Belgium. |
| Course objective : | To study the large mechanisms of the geomorphology : evolution of the landforms (forms and processes), karstic phenomena, mass movements and catchment denudation and the main topic, the rivers :erosion and sediment transport processes, rivers pattern, evolution of the valleys (terraces, captures, antecedence, surimposition). |
| Prerequisites : | Course of Geology |
| Workshops : | Practical works are based on analyses of topographic maps and aerial photographs, about karstic landscapes, incised meanders, meanders in floodplains, captures and terraces. |
| Organization : | Rivers (15h).
Mass movement (6h).
Karst geomorphology (6h).
Landforms, tectonic movements and cycle of erosion (3h).
The theoretical course and work practise are supplemented by three days of field works |
