Course contents :  Analysis of a case study applying a method resulting in a land-use plan for the subject area.
This involves:
- overall reconnaissance of the area
- gathering and interpreting relevant data
- a synthetic diagnostic approach to problems and action objectives
- projecting and assessing of the relevance of planning proposals
- confronting the sector-based development approaches provided by the various working parties
- performing a critical review by merging results and confronting points of view
Every year, a land-use issue is selected according to topical interest, availability of data, and the size of the group.
Examples of cases studies:
In Belgium: communes de Manhay ('97), Gembloux ('98 et 2000), secteur du Sud-Luxembourg (2002), canton de Jodoigne (2005), landscape of industry (La Louvière 2006), landscape management (Attert 2007), problems of mobility (N88 2008)
In foreign countries: Omisalj-Croatia ('99), Qadisha-Libanon (2001-2003), Kotor-Montenegro (2004)
Course objective :  This course aims to confront students with a pedagogic concrete case which will lead them to produce a territorial diagnosis and to design projects of territorial development answering the relevant problems and objectives for the studied territory. This exercise aims to bring the student to become aware of the diverse and intertwined dimensions of the territory and its management tools.
After completing the course the student is expected to
¿ to drawn a rapid diagnosis of a local territory, constructing his own territorial observation and assessment method
¿ to quickly identify issues arising from diagnosis
¿ to build planning proposals relevant regarding the territorial issues
¿ to assess and validate his approach by performing a critical review of the points of view and a control of relevant statistical data
¿ to present his diagnosis and proposals
Prerequisites :  -- AT203 - Elements of human and economic geography
-- AT207 - Concepts and method of town and country planning

Assessment :  Group report (100%)
