| Course contents : | 1.Location of economic activities - The iron and steel industry is used to exemplify how location criteria evolved together with technology from the 16th to the 20th century, and allows to understand the origins of Walloon industrial fabric. Recent developments relating to the issue of the location of activities are then introduced, together with the notions of network and district as new paradigms governing the relationships between space and activities. 2.Towns and regions ¿ urban networks and hierarchy : - Functional hierarchy and the size of population units are discussed. - The city, economic phenomenon and development centre, the price of land and the urban real estate issue 3.The urban field, the ground price and the urban land issue 4.Introduction to the concepts linking the understanding of spatial logic and the objectives and means of action of town and country planning 5.Applications in Belgium, and particularly in Wallonia - understanding regional economic organization: industry, urban organization, current trends. |

| Course objective : | As a follow-on to the general introduction to human geography, this course considers the major geographic theories on spatial economic organisation as a key to understand the mechanisms at which the corrective action taken by town and country planners is aimed. After completing the course the student is expected to ¿ to understand the logics and economic systems that cross and structure the territories: economic activities location principles, the urban structure of the territory, the service role of the cities to their hinterland ¿ to understand the urban field theory ¿ to understand the components of the properties urban and rural prices making |
