Course contents :  Scope of forest mensuration, importance in forestry and related sciences. Measuring of the cross sectional area - definitions, devices, errors. Tree height (definitions, devices, errors). Other tree characteristics (age, bark, crown, stump). Form, cubic and cord volume - measuring standing and lying trees. Biomass determination. Volume tables (type, mathematical models, construction, precision, various applications).
Course objective :  Principles and methods in the estimation of quantitative aspects of trees with emphasis on the mathematical and statistical techniques involved. Practice and application of measurement methods (trees only concerned)
After completing the course the student is expected to
- have a basic understanding of mensuration of trees and how to proceed;
- be able to understand the specific terminology in tree/stand mensuration;
- identify the role of forest mensuration in forest management and forest policy;
- understand principles and methods used in the estimation of quantitative aspects of trees and stands with emphasis on the mathematical and statistical techniques involved;
- be able to use various measuring devices (hypsometers, GPS) and softwares.
Prerequisites :  General silviculture

Knowledge of WORD, EXCEL and MINITAB (PC or MAC)
