Course contents :  Definition and evolution of the forest sector.
Timber sales organization.
Stumpage prices analysis.
Logging organization in Belgium.
Grouping modes of forest owners and estates.
Market development of small diameter timber.
Centralizing organization for high value timber.
Assessment of future wood availability for pulp industry.
Tropical timber market evolution.
World development of prices and timber markets.
Short and medium term prospect in forest products market.
Current events.
Forest politics in Belgium, France, Germany and UK.
Seminar on biomass supply for energy purposes (external collaborator)
Diagnosis of a particular forest sector : individual work including literature search, synthesis, critical analysis, search for solutions, oral communication (10 min max.) and reporting (one-page summary and references).
Course objective :  This course will explore the analysis and interpretation of multiple relationships in both temperate and tropical timber markets between forest management, economy, wood technology and forest politics.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- make a diagnosis of a particular forest sector
- assess stumpage prices after a public sale of wood lots
- analyse or/and develop the forest policy of a country, of a region
Prerequisites :  General training in forestry (minimum of 2 semesters).
