ENVT2037-2  Part 2 - Atmosphere
Duration :  36h Th, 36h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in sciences and environment management First semester6
Master en sciences et gestion de l'environnement, à finalité spécialisée en surveillance de l'environnement, 2nd yearFirst semester6
Holder(s) :  Véronique Beauvois, Anne‑Sophie Carnoy (Gramme), Jean‑Jacques Embrechts, Jacques Nicolas, Anne‑Claude Romain
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The lecture includes 5 chapters, given by 5 different lecturers.

Ce cours comprend 5 chapitres, donnés par 5 personnes différentes:

Chapter 1 : Ionising and non-ionising radiations (Anne-Sophie CARNOY et Véronique BEAUVOIS-1.5 crédits)

Chapitre 2 : Noise (Jean-Jacques EMBRECHTS-1.5 crédits)

Chapitre 3 : Odours (Jacques NICOLAS-1.5 crédits)

Chapitre 4 : Indoor pollution (Jacques NICOLAS-1 crédit)

Chapitre 5 : Air pollution (Anne-Claude ROMAIN-1.5 crédits)

Outline of chapter 1:
-different types of ionising and non-ionising radiations (natural or artificial) present in our environment (X-rays, radioactivity alpha, beta and gamma, electromagnetic fields low-frequency (50 Hz) and high-frequency (radio waves, mobile phone, ...)
-modes of interaction of those radiations with matter
-detectors used for measurement (+ practical works)
-hazards due to those radiations, standards.

Outline of chapter 2:
-basis of acoustics
-how to characterize "annoyance" by noise indicators
-how to measure them in the context of environmental regulations
-outdoor noise propagation and immission (including traffic noise)

Outline of chapter 3:
-description of human olfactory system
-definition and various dimensions of odour
-methods of odour sampling and of measurement of various characteristics of odour annoyance.

Outline of chapter 4:
-types of indoor pollutions (combustion, solvents, biocides, moulds, radon, ...)
-diagnosis and remediation methods
-health impact
-application to wood material case.

Outline of chapter 5:
The first part presents atmospheric pollution
-composition, structure and chemistry of atmosphere
-main pollutants, their origin and their impacts, associated vocabulary, regulation, measurement network in Belgium, standards
The second part presents major measurement techniques of gaseous pollutants
-operating principle (chemical sensors, spectroscopy, detectors)
-instrument selection according to different criteria.
Course objective :  Teaching basic notions in the different treated domains as well as various used indicators. The student will be able to distinguish them, to measure them (at least understanding operating procedure of instruments) and to discuss the results in the context of environmental regulation.
Prerequisites :  General knowledge in physics and chemistry (secondary education level).
Workshops :  About the half of the course is devoted to practical works.

Directed exercises, visits of plants, workshops, video presentations, discussion on practical instrument specification sheets, field or laboratory measurement, sometimes in Liège (noise, radiation).
Organization :  The lecture is given in modules covering each a half-day of 4 hours (1 credit=3 half-days), in an independent way for each lecturer, but within a condensed time period. Practical works are included in the timetable and in planned credits. Organisation of travelling towards field or Liège's laboratories is planned.
Written notes :  Lecture notes are available for every chapter, either through the lecturer during the course, or through official ULg web site, or through other web sites (http://www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/services/acous/STSI/) for "noise" part.
Practical pieces of information (e.g. : instrument specification sheets, standards) is also attached to some notes.
Assessment :  Each professor questions the student by his own manner, but the global score is calculated as the average of each chapter score.

According to the lecturer, the examination could be oral or written (generally oral for chapters 2, 3 and 4 and written for chapters 1 and 5 and with closed book). The evaluation concerns both the "theory" (reporting lesson subjects) and practice (critical choice of a measurement method or practical results discussion). A part of the score could be supplied by a practical work report.
