ENVT0854-1  Information representation
Duration :  40h Th, 20h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in sciences and environment management First semester5
Master en sciences et gestion de l'environnement, à finalité spécialisée en surveillance de l'environnement, 2nd yearFirst semester5
Holder(s) :  Jean‑Jacques Boreux, Jacques Nicolas, Bernard Tychon
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The lecture includes 3 chapters, given by 3 different lecturers.

Chapter 1: The model as a tool for environmental monitoring (Jean-Jacques BOREUX-2 credits)

Chapter 2: Construction of global environmental indicators (Jacques NICOLAS-1 credit)

Chapter 3: Spatialisation of information (Bernard TYCHON- 2 credits)

Outline of chapter 1:
Continuation of course ENVT0852-1 on parametric statistical modeling by introducing the space and temporal components.

Outline of chapter 2:
Use and necessity of global indicators for decision making
Normalisation and aggregation of variables into unique indicator
Qualities of a good indicator
International environmental indicator systems (PSR, DPSIR, ...)
Examples.

Outline of chapter 3:
Part on "teledetection":
- Electromagnetic radiation, electromagnetic spectrum, interactions with the atmosphere, interactions radiation-target, characteristics of images
- Receivers: spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal resolution; geometric distortion; examples of land-based, aerial and spatial receivers
- Analysis of images: visual interpretation, development of images (enhancement, transformations, classification, integration, etc.)
- Applications to surveillance of an environment: agriculture, hydrology, geology, forestry, etc.
Part on "Geographical Information Systems":
- Basic Concepts
- Main functionalities of a GIS
- Models and Structures of databases
- Representation of geographical data
- Integration of spatial data
- Analysis of data in vectorial and matricial modes
- Spatial interpolation, aggregation, disaggregation
Course objective :  Learning to use tools aiming at representing the collected information in a useful form for a decision maker. Those tools are introduced into 3 versions: the model, the global indicators and the tools of information spatialisation.
Prerequisites :  Chapter 1 : having followed lecture ENVT0752-1.
Chapter 2 : knowledge of chief environmental issues
Chapter 3 : smattering of computer science and geography.
Workshops :  Chapter 1 : exercices with R et WinBUGS.
Chapter 2 : critical analysis of indicators proposed in the literature
Chapter 3 : exercices with Envi et Arcgis
Organization :  The lecture is given in modules covering each a half-day of 4 hours (1 credit=3 half-days), in an independent way for each lecturer, but within a condensed time period. Practical works are included in the timetable and in planned credits.
Written notes :  Chapter 1:

-Bernier, J., Parent, E., Boreux, JJ. 2000. Statistique Pour L'environnement . Traitement Bayésien de L'incertitude. Tec et Doc, Lavoisier.
- Boreux, JJ., Parent, E., Bernier, J. 2009 (publication in October 2009). Pratique du calcul bayésien, Springer Verlag France.

Chapter 2:

On-line lecture notes available (notes and power point)

Chapter 3:

Power Point support ;

- Notions fondamentales de télédétection publié par le Centre Canadien en Télédétection ;
- Bordé P., 2002. SIG : concepts, outils et données, Ed. Hermès sciences publication.

.
Assessment :  Each professor questions the student by his own manner, but the global score is calculated as the average of each chapter score.

Chapter 1: Each student receives a true problem of decision to solve using a bayesian parametric statistical model on which he can work during several weeks. To a fixed date, he submits a written report that he will defend orally in period of examination.

Chapitre 2: Report on indicator construction for an imposed case study.

Chapter 3 : Written exam
