Course contents :  The course will consider the following topics.
  • Power system control centers : functions and architecture
    Data acquisition : SCADA system, RTUs, PMUs
  • State estimation: weighted least squares estimator, observability analysis, bad data analysis, topology errors.
  • Short-term load forecasting
  • Real-time security analysis
  • Functional optimization: economic dispatch, unit commitment, optimal power flow.
Course objective :  
  • Describe essential real-time functions of Energy Management Systems.
  • Present applications of optimization theory to power system problems taking into account both security and economic constraints.
Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge in power system components and analysis.
Workshops :  
  • A homework consisting in implementing a specified optimization problem on a test system.
  • Analysis of a scientific publication dealing with one course topic.
Written notes :  Slides available on the students' portal myULg.
Assessment :  
  • Grading of the written report and oral presentation of the project
  • Grading of the oral presentation of the analysed scientific publication.
