ELEC0047-1  Dynamics of electric energy systems
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Electrical Engineering, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Master in Electro-mechanical Engineering, Teaching Focus, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Holder(s) :  Thierry Van Cutsem, Thierry Van Cutsem
Language :  French language
Course contents :  1st part. Modelling of components and of their controls
  • dynamics of synchronous generator : time constants, inductances, state equations, per unit systems, rotor motion
  • power system modelling and simulation under the quasi-sinusoidal approximation
  • controls of the synchronous machine: turbines and speed governors, excitation systems and automatic voltage regulators
  • other components: induction machines, static var compensators (SVCs), fixed and variable series compensation (FACTS devices).

2nd part. Stability
  • Transient angle stability (large disturbances): analysis of the one-machine infinite-bus system (equal area criterion), general analysis methods, means to improve transient stability
  • small-signal angle stability: analysis of the one-machine infinite-bus system, analysis of a general system, modal analysis. Stability improvement: design of controllers for oscillation damping, mainly the power system stabilisers
  • frequency stability : définition, description
  • voltage stability: analysis of short-term and long-term instability mechanisms, stability improvement. Specific analysis methods.

3rd part. Unbalanced faults

Analysis using the Fortescue components method.
Course objective :  3rd-cycle course introducing to power system dynamics: modelling, control and stability.
Prerequisites :  ELEC029 or equivalent.
Workshops :  Examples using a SIMULINK (MATLAB) library of power system models are shown during the lectures. A personal work using this tool is requested.
Organization :  Course taught during the first or the second semester, depending on the audience.
Written notes :  Some notes as well as the slides used during the lectures are available in electronic (PDF) format. They can be downloaded from my Web page (see below).
Assessment :  A personal work is requested, covering various parts of the course and using the above mentioned SIMULINK software. A written report is requested, with possibly an oral presentation.
