  • Limitations and challenges of health care economic evaluations
  • The place of health economic evaluation in Belgium
Course objective :  Part F. FECHER The aim of the course is to introduce to the running of health care and insurance markets :
  • Features of health care (uncertainty, externalities, information asymmetry,¿)
  • Definitions of moral hazard and adverse selection
  • Comparative analysis of health system in the O.E.C.D. countries
  • Analysis of determinants of health care demand (incomes, morbidity,¿)
  • Analysis of variations in medical practices of providers
  • Study of effectiveness and equity goals pursued by public authorities
  • Analysis of reforms introduced into health care and insurance markets
Part D. PORIGNON
The purpose of this part is to analyse the allocation of health care financial resources on the international scene, with a focus on developing countries. The mechanisms for financial resource generation are described and their implications on health policy and service delivery are analysed. This part is complementary with international health aspects of the General Introduction to Public Health course.
Part M. HILIGSMANN (Introduction to health economic evaluation) The purpose of this part is to present the roles and challenges of health economic evaluation and to explain the methods for the economic evaluation of health care programmes. The student will be able, after this course, to discuss choices in health-care decision-making process, to understand the types and methods of health economic evaluations, and to interpret results of economic evaluations that are frequent in the medical literature. A specific attention is devoted to the application of theoretical concepts through exercises and illustrative examples.
