Course contents :  The focus will be put on the so called independent publishers within the global market of the publishing industry.
I. The rise of independent publishers
II. Typology of the independent publishing companies in Belgium and in France
III. Speeches and postures
IV. Independent publishing by sectors : comics, literature and political essays
V. Independent publisher and digital turn
Conclusions : limits and constraints of editorial independence.
Course objective :  1) Developing an in-depth knowledge of the independent publishing within the global publishing industry as well as within the Belgium and French editorial fields;
2) Considering the independent publishing from the two points of view of economical constraints and sociology of practices;
3) Acquiring a practical knowledge of a moving professional field.
Prerequisites :  Students who have not followed the course on Analysis of Cultural Institutions (BAC2 Information and Communication) must read the following book: Pascal Durand and Anthony Glinoer, Naissance de l'Editeur. L'édition à l'âge romantique, Paris-Bruxelles, Les Impressions Nouvelles, coll. "Réflexions faites", new edition. 2008.
