| CLIM0010-1 | Fortran and Linux for the climatologist
| Duration : | 15h Th, 45h Pr |
| Credits/ECTS : |
| Holder(s) : | Xavier Fettweis |
| Language : | French language |
| Course contents : | The lectures introduce:
- The programming language Fortran used in most of the climate and weather forecast models.
- The operating system Linux on which the climate models run. Linux is also used to process climate data.
- The graphic tool Ferret used to plot the model outputs as well as the climate data set (e.g.: the reanalysis).
Only the elements of Fortran/Linux used in climatology will be teach. |
| Course objective : | The lectures aim to familiarize the students to some computer tools (Linux, Fortran and Ferret) used to process the climate data and, to run and analyze the climate models. |
| Prerequisites : | Good knowledge in climatology and mathematics. It is not needed to know the programming to do this course. |
| Workshops : | The exercises asked every week will be mainly do during the tutorials where the teacher will be present to help the students. |
| Organization : | This course is based on the concept "project-based learning" i.e. every week, the student has to resolve a programming exercises for the next week. The theoretical basis will be teach in the previous lecture. |
| Written notes : | Reference articles are presented to the students during the first lesson.
The pdf files of the lecture slides are available for the students on webct (http://www.webct.ulg.ac.be/) |
| Assessment : | Each student has to resolve on a computer a small problem using Fortran, Linux and Ferret.
Three evaluated exercices (2h) will be proposed to the students as well as a mock exam (4h). The part of these ones will be 25% in the final evaluation. |
