| Course contents : | Given in the form of a weekly seminar, this course on specialised questions of contemporary documentary making, each year addresses a precise problem in the analysis of documentary films. Based on the course given by the lecturer and student presentations, this seminar specialises in documentary analysis of many films around a shared problem. [In 2008-2009, this course on specialised contemporary documentaries concentrated on the problem of creating documentaries under conditions of censorship and more widely in a context of restrictions on liberty. The body of films consisted of a collection of non-fiction works treating the terrorist crisis in Germany in the 1970s.] |

| Course objective : | At the end of this seminar, which marks the culmination of teaching on documentary analysis given in earlier years (cinema and video documentary courses; courses in contemporary documentaries), students will be able to develop a precise, in-depth and personal analysis of a documentary subject. Given that the course is presented as a case study enabling students to address wider issues, students are requested to carry out their work/presentation (cf. "evaluation") of films which have not been covered in the course and which do not address the same historical episode as that set out in the lecturer's presentations. |

| Prerequisites : | Students must have followed earlier courses in the field of history and the theory of documentary cinema (cf. contemporary documentary and cinema and video documentaries). |

The course in specialised questions of contemporary documentaries will be given in the second term, on Thursdays between 2pm-5pm. |

| Written notes : | At the start of each part of the course (divided into four "chapters" each comprising two sessions), students will receive a programme including a selective bibliography as well as filmography of films and extracts of films seen during the course. |

| Assessment : | Students are requested to carry out an individual oral presentation to be given during the two last sessions of the course (approximately seven presentations per session). This presentation, lasting 45 minutes, should propose a personal, in-depth and rigorous analysis of a documentary film whose form and theme recall a problem addressed during the course. In line with the participative nature of the seminar, each presentation will be followed by a discussion with all students. |
