CHIM9258-1  Thermodynamic and spectroscopic characterization of biomolecules
Duration :  15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Chemical Sciences, in-depth approach, 1st yearToute l'année2
Master in Chemical Sciences, didactic approach, 1st yearToute l'année2
Master in Chemical Sciences, specialized approach, 1st yearToute l'année2
Master in Chemical SciencesToute l'année2
Holder(s) :  Valérie Gabelica
Language :  French language
Course contents :  This course introduces various characterization methods applied to biomolecules (mainly nucleic acids and proteins):
1- Spectroscopy methods: UV-vis, infrared, circular dichroism, fluorescence, surface plasmon resonance,...
2- Calorimetry methods: isothermal titration calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry.
3- Introduction to mass spectrometry of biopolymers.

In addition to the principles of each method, we will also discuss the data treatment necessary to extract thermodynamic or kinetic parameters relative to biomolecule folding or interactions. Finally, we will discuss the interpretation of these macroscopic parameters on the molecular
point of view (structure and dynamics).
Course objective :  Understand which techniques is best appropriate to a given problem, what are the limitations of the different methods, what are the underlying assumptions in the data interpretation process.
Organization :  2nd semester, 7 or 8 lectures (2h)
Written notes :  Copy of the slides. List of key review/tutorial articles.
Assessment :  Written preparation, oral defense.
