CHIM9242-1  Fundamentals of quantitative analytical chemistry, part 1
Duration :  18h Th, 6h SEM
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in bioengineering, 3rd yearFirst semester2
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in BioengineeringFirst semester2
Master in Forests and natural Areas Engineering, Professional Focus, 1st yearFirst semester2
Required preliminary complements to register in the Advanced master in bio-engineering: sanitary engineeringFirst semester2
Holder(s) :  Georges Lognay
Language :  French language
Course contents :  - Description of the preliminary steps of chemical analysis : sampling techniques and unit operations in analytical chemistry : preparing - decomposing or dissolving samples for analysis.
- Extraction of organic molecules, mineralisations.
- Dissolution techniques - mineralisation.
- Gravimetric methods of analysis and applications.
- Titrimetric methods (acid-base, precipitation, redox and complexometric titrations)
- Preparation of calibrated solutions.
- UV-Vis spectrophotometric Analysis
- Establishment of the performances of analytical methods.
- Case studies and applications.
The course is completed by a thematic complementary seminar (Environmental chemistry) which is followed by a personnal work.
Course objective :  The course is designed to inculcate fundamental knowledges dealing with stoechiometric analytical methods (non instrumental measures). It presents the different parts of protocols in analytical chemistry with emphazise on the definition of methodological performances.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- demonstrate a good knowledge of the principles of quantitative analytical chemistry (non instrumental methods).
- understand and restitute theorical notions related to the UV-Vis. spectrophotometry;
- asses the performances of a chemical method of analysis.
