| Course objective : | Medicinal chemistry is a science devoted to the design, the synthesis and the understanding of the mode of action of drugs, and more specifically, those obtained by organic synthesis. This science tries to establish a link between the chemical structure of a drug and its biological activity.
The general aims of this course are the following : to familiarize the student with the active components of drugs, their chemical structures, their origin, their design, their evolution, the field of their therapeutic applications, their international nonproprietary names and several examples of trade marks. Some examples of synthesis are provided, the general physicochemical properties are reviewed. The systematic part is introduced by the presentation of the traditional and innovative steps in drug design, by the review of classical synthetic processes and by a summary of the I.U.P.A.C. nomenclature. |
| Prerequisites : | Appropriate knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry, basic knowledge of physiology. |
| Workshops : | Seminars (20 h) : revision of selected theoretical aspects ; solubility, hydrophilicity and lipophilicity associated with drugs; acido-basic character of drugs; importance of the stereochemistry; quantitative structure-activity relationships; development steps; nomenclature; case studies of drug design. The seminars are usually given on Monday afternoon (14 h 00 - 16 h 00) during 10 weeks. |
| Organization : | The lessons (1 h 30) are usually given twice weekly during the second semester. |
| Written notes : | Written notes upgraded each year are distributed to the students. |
| Assessment : | Written exam in may-june (first session). Written exam in august-september (second session). |
