CHIM0310-5  Chemistry preparing to biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences
Duration :  60h Th, 20h Pr, 20h QA Sess., 20h REM
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in biomedical sciences, 1st yearToute l'année11
Bachelor in pharmaceutical sciences, 1st yearToute l'année12
Holder(s) :  Christine Jérôme
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Topics : general and organic chemistry.

Aggregation states of the matter, atomic and molecular structures, chemical bondings, chemical equilibria, pH, redox, thermodynamics, kinetics, reactions and examples related to biomedical sciences.
General characteristics of organic compounds and their main reactions, aromatic hydrocarbons and derivatives, synthetic polymers and biopolymers.
Course objective :  - Acquire the basic tools of chemistry and biochemistry

- Check the reasoning ability, the learning and understanding of the topics (this aim is very important for all lectures of the cursus).

The lecture is oriented towards the applications to life sciences as the aim of this lecture is to purchase to the students the basic tools in order to enable them to sense their use in the chemistry and biochemistry lectures.
Prerequisites :  Knowledge of some backgrounds of chemistry of the secondary level.
Workshops :  5 laboratories of 4h are programmed to enable the students to apply and sense by themselves the practical involvements of the theoretical lecture.
These laboratories are mandatory.
A report will be asked for each laboratory to all students and QCM/QROC questions will be asked.
The lab cotation will be the mean of te reports and answers to questions during these labs.
Organization :  The lecture is distributed among the first two quadrimesters but according an asymmetric way (45h at the 1st quadrimester and 15 h at the second one), i.e. two lectures of 1h45 every week at the 1st quadrimester and the remaining lectures during the second quadrimester.
Written notes :  Lecture notes : They are sold at the first lecture. They consit of two books entitled "Introduction à la chimie" (2009) : C. Jérôme, of 6 chapters each. The transparencies used during the lectures will also be available during the year via My Ulg.
Assessment :  The first general examination is occurring during January and will cover the topics studied during the first quadrimester (Q1). Students getting at least 10/20 will be exempted for these chapters in June. For the students who failed this examination, the results will not be taken into account and 20h of remediation will be organized during the second quadrimester. The examinations in June as well as in September will be only written ones (Multiple choices questions, (QCM)). It will occur by the following way :
- QCM on Q1 (1/2 day), only for students that failed in January - QCM on Q2.
The final quotation will be calculated as follows : 20% for laboratories (reports + questions during the labs) 50% for Q1 30% for Q2
The global quotation will be the averaged on 20.
