CHIM0274-2  General Chemistry (2nd part), included an introduction to organic chemistry.
Duration :  40h Th, 20h Labo., 10h QA Sess.
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in physics, 2nd yearSecond semester7
Holder(s) :  Bénédicte Vertruyen
Language :  French language
Course contents :  This second part of the general chemistry course is devoted to three main topics:
- chemical thermodynamics
- atoms and bonding
- introduction to organic chemistry
The table of contents is available on request (email to b.vertruyen.at.ulg.ac.be).
Course objective :  In addition to the usual "knowledge-based" objectives, the course aims at developping more general skills, such as : analysis of graphics, problem solving, assessment of the validity of a theory,...
Prerequisites :  - General chemistry course (1st year Bachelor)
- Modern physics / partim Quantum physics (1st quadrimester of 2nd year Bachelor)
Workshops :  5 practical sessions (4 h each) are organized. Attendance is compulsory. Students are required to wear lab coats and safety glasses. Grades will be based on written reports and behaviour in the lab.
Organization :  Lectures (2x2h/week) , exercise sessions (5x2h) and practicals sessions (5x4h) will take place during the 2nd quadrimester (February - May). Exercise sessions will focus on thermodynamics and organic chemistry. A written test on thermodynamics exercises will be organised during the 2nd quadrimester.
Written notes :  - Lecture notes : a copy of the slides is available (paper or pdf files). Please note that in order to promote attendance to lectures, some derivations, complements, or examples are not included in the slides.
There is no specific reference book but a short list of books (available from the university library) is supplied for students wishing to get more information on the different topics. - Lab and exercise notes are available and can usually be bought on an agreed date, just before a lecture.
- Lists of equations are provided (one for the exercice sessions/tests, the other for the theory exam).
Assessment :  - practical work : 10 %
- exercise test/exam : 20 % (students having obtained a mark of minimum 12/20 for the test organized during the 2nd quadrimester are exempted from the exercise exam)
- theory : 70 %
