CHIM0209-2  Inorganic chemistry
Duration :  30h Th, 70h Pr, 5h QA Sess., 1d Vis. Ind. Pl.
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in chemical sciences, 3rd yearSecond semester9
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Chemical Sciences9
Holder(s) :  Bénédicte Vertruyen
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The course is divided in 3 sections :
1. Structural inorganic chemistry : crystallographic structures of elements and compounds - geometric and energetic factors in ionic compounds
2. Phase diagrams : binary solid diagrams
3. Synthesis and reactivity : Preparation methods of the elements - preparative electrochemistry - diffusion in solids - metallic ions in aqueous solutions - binary oxides reactivity - industrial preparation of a few common inorganic compounds
The theoretical course is complemented by a laboratory project (see below). In addition, 2-3 exercise sessions are organised so that students can get hands-on experience of crystallography software.
Course objective :  The course (including the lab project) intends to teach to the students the main concepts of inorganic chemistry, so that the students will be able to understand and carry out the syntheses and characterization procedures described in the literature.
Prerequisites :  basic knowledge in crystallography
Workshops :  Practical sessions consist in two parts : (i) experiments carried out by all students and (ii) a lab project, by teams of two students, each group focusing on the synthesis and characterization of one family of compounds. The results of the lab project are to be reported both as a written report and an oral presentation.

Attendance is compulsory. Students are required to wear lab coats and safety glasses.
Organization :  - Theoretical course : 2 lectures per week during the second quadrimestre. - Practical sessions : on Thursdays and Fridays during 4 weeks (February). Oral presentation of results in March. - 2-3 sessions with computers, devoted to structural chemistry : in February. Test organised on March 9th (to be confirmed) - Visit of a chemical factory
Labs and the visit to the factory are compulsory.
Written notes :  - Lecture notes : a copy of the slides and a course summary are available (paper or pdf files). Please note that in order to promote attendance to lectures, some derivations, complements, or examples are not included in the slides.
There is no specific reference book but a short list of books (available from the university library) is supplied for students wishing to get more information on the different topics.

- A lab manual is available.
Assessment :  The final mark takes into account the evaluation of the lab sessions (daily work, written reports and oral presentation), the mark for the cristallography exercise on computer and the results of the end-of-year theory exam.
