| Course contents : | This course is organised as a workshop, where students work in small groups to solve an integrated problem : they must apply knowledge from several previous courses : chemical processes, chemical engineering, applied thermodynamics, process modeling. Each group of students has to carry out a litterature search about a product : market and applications, commercial specifications, production routes, typical capacity of a plant, raw materials needed, economical data (price). Then a production process is selected. Physical property data for all components involved in the process must be retrieved or estimated. Next a simulation model of the plant is built with a flowsheeting software in order to obtain the mass and energy balance. |
| Course objective : | Gain practical skill in process design by solving an open ended real life problem, which implies personal decisions (supported by sound reasoning) when confronted with redundant, missing or contradictory data. Learn also to master several computer tools used in process flowsheeting, physical property estimation and optimisation. |
| Prerequisites : | Basic knowledge in applied thermodynamics, chemical engineering and process modeling |
| Workshops : | The course is organised as a workshop, under supervision of a tutor. Student must organise the team work and share the tasks. They have unlimited access to the department computer ressources and software tools. The tutor is available for advice at least 4 hr/week. |
| Organization : | The first part of the work (litterature search) takes place early in the academic year. The process modelling and flowsheeting work takes place at the end of the year, after completion of course SYST0004, where students learn how to use the flowheeting software. |

| Assessment : | Evaluation is based on the report submitted by the team. Results must be presented by the students. The exam consists in an individual discussion with the tutor and the teacher about the work. |
