| Course contents : | INTRODUCTION : Definition of plants and their relevance in the Biosphere.Diversity and Unity of plants, scientific disciplines studying plants.
PART 1 : ORGANIZATION OF SEED PLANTS
Flowers and Inflorescences, fruits and seeds, the meristematic cell, cell division and differentiation, primary tissues, the root (anatomy and morphology),the shoot(anatomy and morphology),the leaf (anatomy and morphology, photosynthesis),
PART2. EVOLUTION AND DIVERSITY OF PLANTS.
Position of plant organisms in the classification of living beings, Moners, eucaryotes (general principles), fungi (fungal protists and mycetes), eucaryotic algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, from ovules to seeds, angiosperms.
PART 3 : SYSTEMATICS OF ANGIOSPERMS
Foundations of flowering plant systematics, overview of the main botanical families
PART 4 : INITIATION TO THE STUDY OF VEGETATION
Description and interpretation of vegetation (by use of floristic, physionomical, ecological, historical criteria)

| Course objective : | Basic knowledge in botany (concepts and methods of the main disciplines); plants are studied at the level of cells to the level ecosystems.
After completing the course the student is expected to
Identify and describe the main plant structures (cells, tissues, organs)
Identify, name and classify outstanding representatives of higher plants
Use a reference Flora to identify the familiy and species of seed plants of the Belgian flora.
Describe the major organization patterns and reproduction cycles of the main plant types.
Briefly describe vegetation by using floristic, biogeographical and ecological criteria. |
