| Course contents : | Nomenclature rules aim at a good communication concerning living organisms, communication that must be universal and not ambiguous. For that purpose rules have been established and validated by international congresses. For botany, after each congress, a new edition of the code is prepared, incorporating the recently approved amendments. Since 1975, V. Demoulin has been a member of the Editorial Committee of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature and took part in the elaboration of 6 editions of the code. With this course he can make benefit from his experience the students interested by the way to correctly name plants, or even curious about the elaboration of a judicial system in the realm of science. |

| Course objective : | Make understand the logic of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature and its history. Make its use easy. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | Some knowledge of botanical systematics is useful. Nonetheless, systematics aiming at the creation of a classification is a different process from nomenclature and it is not absolutely necessary to be familiar with it. |

| Workshops : | Not relevant. The lectures will however include numerous exemples. |
 |
| Organization : | Schedule to be decided by common agreement. |

| Written notes : | Photocopies of the main parts of the code and of exemples. |
 |
| Assessment : | Oral examination with discussion of exemples. |
