| Course contents : | Thallophytes, that is algae and fungi, are organisms making problems in the reconstruction of evolution. Their origin is very ancient (more than one billion years) and maybe close to that of eucaryotes . Gene sequences comparison gives many informations on this diversification of early eucaryotes, but even with the development of phylogenomics (comparison of data obtained through the sequencing of full genomes), numerous interrogations subsist. Comparative ultrastructure and biochemistry, as well as paleontology, are also fundamental to the comprehension of this evolution. A good phylogeny of Thallophytes would allow to understand problems like the acquisition or loss of photosynthesis, for which it is still difficult to decide if it is on old characteristic or not of eucaryotes. |
| Course objective : | Inform on the problems of reconstruction of the evolution of algae and fungi. Demonstrate the interest and the difficulties of this reconstruction, linked to the origin and early diversification of eucaryotes. |
| Prerequisites : | A good knowledge of general biology, especially of biochemistry and ultrastructure. |
| Organization : | Timetable to be determined between the teacher and the interested students. |
| Written notes : | Photocopies of relevant papers will be distributed. |
| Assessment : | Oral examination. |
