BOTA0321-2  Botanical introduction to pharmacognosy, part B : biotechnology and mycology, 15h Th
Duration :  15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in pharmaceutical sciences, 2nd yearSecond semester2
Holder(s) :  Vincent Demoulin, Jacques Dommes
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Mycology

Three lectures are devoted to the introduction to the fungal way of live and the main group, the Ascomycetes. Among those a special attention is given to yeasts as technological and scientific tools (small fully sequenced genome, transformations, fermentations). Other themes: parasites and symbionts (lichens), mycotoxins and antibiotics.
One lecture is devoted to Basidiomycetes, insisting on their importance as mycorhizal symbionts or wood-rotters (ecological importance, destruction of timber, biotechnological potential of the capacity to metabolize lignin) and toxic fungi.
One lecture is devoted to other fungi with emphasis on Mucorales (moulds) and Endogonales (endomycorhizae), Oomycetes (economical and historical importance) and Dictyostelium (tool of molecular biology).

Biotechnology

  • Production of recombinant proteins in yeasts and filamentous fungi
  • Plant productions
  • In vitro plant tissue culture
  • Plant breeding
  • Plant genetic engineering and molecular farming
Course objective :  The aim of this course is to introduce the methods used or being developed for the production of pharmaceuticals by plants, including fungi (but not bacteria).

The mycology part presents the world of fungi under its different aspects with an emphasis on those important for the pharmacist (pathogens, toxic fungi, sources of pharmaceuticals...).
Prerequisites :  Partim A of this course, as well as basic knowledge of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology.
Organization :  Lectures organised during second period, every Wednesday morning, after the end of partim A. These lectures are held either at the Institute of Zoology downtown (quai Van Beneden, 4000 Liege), or on the Sart Tilman campus, most often at the Institute of Botany (building B-22, car park P70).
Written notes :  Notes covering all the course, as well as Powerpoint presentations are available. These documents can be downloaded from MyULg (WebCT).

Reference books:
Several interesting works for students interested by further informations will be presented, but they are not necessary for the understanding of the course.
Assessment :  Written exam with multiple choice questions. To succeed one needs at least a mean of 10/20 and 8/20 in biotechnology as well as in mycology.
Contacts :  Prof. V. Demoulin (V.Demoulin@ulg.ac.be)
Prof. J. Dommes (j.dommes@ulg.ac.be)
Assistant for mycology: D. Sirjacobs (D.Sirjacobs@ulg.ac.be, 04/366.38.54)
