Course contents :  First part : The structural basis of the life
1. The chemical composition of the living beings
2. The structure of the living beings
3. The cell periphery
4. The cell nucleus
5. the endoplasmic reticulum
6. The Golgi apparatus
7. The lysosomes
8. The peroxysomes
9. The mitochondria
10.The Chloroplasts

Second Part : The life continuity
13.The cell multiplication
14.The reproduction of organisms
Course objective :  This introductory course on cell biology is devoted to studying the structure and functions of the cell, the common denominator of living matter. The terms of cell multiplication and reproductive are also discussed.
Prerequisites :  Advance knowledge of French
Workshops :  TP1: How to use a microscope and a binocular magnifying glass (common to this course and those of plant biology and animal)
TP2: osmosis and membrane permeability
TP3: Cell energetics
TP4: Mitosis and meiosis
TP5 : Animal reproduction
TP6 : Plant reproduction
TP7 : Animal tissues
TP8 : Plant tissues
Organization :  The lectures are essentially given on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 12:00 during the first 8 weeks of the first quadrimester. Four seminaries will be also given.

Practical works concretely illustrate important aspects of the course. The sessions of practical works will give the first quadrimester in the Great Hall of practical work of the Institute of Zoology (building I1, 22, quai Van Beneden, Liege).

Some remediation thematic sessions will be organised during the first quadrimester.
Written notes :  Of course notes and a guide of practical work are available to students at the beginning of the academic year.
Reference books:

- Biologie générale. P. Van Gansen Ed. Masson
- Biologie cellulaire. M. Maillet. Ed. Masson
- Biologie et physiologie cellulaires. A. Berkaloff et al. Ed. Hermann
- Une visite de la cellule vivante. Ch. De Duve. Ed. De Boeck
Assessment :  - Tests in the form of QCM and on the material seen during the theoretical course will be held during the first quadrimester.

- Tests on the subject of the practical work will be held at the end of each session of practical works in cell biology.

- An examination in the form of a written test on any matter (theory and practice), will be held at each session. The matter of seminaries will not do part of the exam matter.

- The overall mark submitted for deliberation will consider the QCM points, the interrogation points obtained at the end of practical work sessions and the mark of written test.

Remarks :  The practical works constitute substantial assistance in the acquisition of knowledge, in the acquisition of a critical spirit and in the development of a sense of observation. To be profitable, assistance to practical works involves the previous study of the corresponding matter (at least a thorough reading). The presence in the practical works is mandatory. Any absence for medical reasons must be justified by a certificate. In case of repeated unjustified absences, the student will be denied access to the examination of cell biology.
