Holder(s) :  Bernard Peers, Claire Périlleux
Language :  French language
Course contents :  This course contains two parts: 'Plant Development', taught by Claire Périlleux, and 'Animal Development', taught by Bernard Peers.
Course objective :  The aim of this course is to illustrate the state of the art in the field of Developmental Biology, from genetical control to morphology, including signaling pathways.

The 'Plant Biology' section concerns both vegetative and reproductive development, with special emphasis on genes and hormones that regulate meristem functioning and homeostasis. In a third chapter, homone signaling and positional information are described. More details are given for auxin, its polar transport and morphogenic roles.

The "Animal Biology section is composed of three chapter. The first is devoted to the fundamental notion of developmental biology (main stages of embryogenesis, definitions, description of the different types of regulatory factors controlling development and the techniques used for deciphering the expression and the function of genes within the embryo). The second chapter will expose the development of xenopus and zebrafish. The last chapter will cover some of cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling formation of tissues from the ectoderm and mesoderm. The formation of the central nervous system, the muscles and limbs will be exposed as well as the factors involved in neuronal cell differentiation.
Prerequisites :  General Plant- and Animal- Physiology. Methods in Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering.
Workshops :  Practical courses are integrated to the course 'Stages ou travaux pratiques intégrés (y compris séminaires)'
Organization :  Lectures are given during the second quadimestre: on Tuesday mornings for the Plant Development part and Wednesday mornings for the Animal Development part.
Written notes :  Powerpont slides.
Assessment :  A common exam is organised by both teachers. Students pass according to their mean note, and if they have obtained at least 8/20 for each part (Plant & Animal Development).
