| BIOL0350-1 | Pharmaceutical applications of molecular biology
| Duration : | 10h Th |
| Credits/ECTS : |

| Course contents : | The course gives information on the various applications of the techniques of molecular biology in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. After a short recall of molecular biology, the first part of the course consists in showing, using examples drawn from the field of oncology and inflammatory diseases, how new pharmacological targets are identified and how drugs are developed. The second part of the course presents the techniques of bio-engineering applied to the preparation of recombining proteins used as bio-drugs (insulin, interferon-a, interleukin-10...). New therapeutic approaches, such as gene therapy and "interfering" RNAs, which offer more targeted approach of the treatment, constitute the third part of the course. The last part of the course is devoted to the new diagnostic approaches: on the one hand, PCR and its interest in diagnosis and follow-up of leukaemias, on the other hand, the micro-arrays and their interest to establish a profile of gene expression and to allow a specific treatment in particular diseases. |
| Course objective : | The objective of the course is to show the growing role of biotechnologies in designing new drugs and in developing various tests, making it possible to improve treatment efficiency. |
