The main aim of biochemistry is the complete understanding at the molecular level of all the chemical processes associated with living cells. This is mainly achieved by isolating molecules and understanding their structure and their function. The field of biochemistry is as vast as life itself, as chemical reactions take place wherever life exists. Biochemists study the chemical reactions and changes which take place in micro-organisms, plants, fish, insects, lesser and superior mammals and human beings.
Biochemical knowledge of other forms of life is directly relevant to an understanding of the biochemistry of human beings. For example, current theories on the regulation of gene and enzyme activity spring from earlier studies of bread mould and bacteria. Just as in general physiology, general biochemistry demonstrates the integrated unity of living beings.
This course is aimed at understanding organism's molecular structure, the notion of metabolic sequences, the rules governing the integration of these sequences, the general basics of cell energy, the source of inter-cellular free energy, and biochemical tissue specialisation. Specific examples will be chosen to introduce the student to human biochemistry. |

| Course objective : | General objectives :
To describe the principle properties of molecules composing the living species.
To give a clear and structured information about the chemical reactions within the cell.
To analyse the relationships between the different molecules.
To explain how the cell structure is maintained and multiplied or how the cell can achieve a particular function.
To permit the students to understand the biochemical basis of general physiology and human physiology.
To develop the critical thinking of students by pro or contra demonstrations on different subjects or debate some unverified hypothesis. |

| Prerequisites : | First year courses in physics, chemistry (notably organic) and biology. |
|
| Workshops : | This work will be run by department staff and student assistants and will consist of three actual experiments. |
|
| Organization : | Ex-cathedra courses, test exercises, practical applied work and seminars. |
|
| Written notes : | Syllabus will be avalaible at the beginning oif the quadrimester, in its second edition (2008-2009). |
|
| Assessment : | Written exams in January and September. |
