Biostatistics II, 2nd year

This course is the second part of the teaching of Biostatistics at the Faculty of Medicine. It addresses mre advanced statistical methods, such as regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), contingency tables and non-parametric statistical techniques.

Each lesson consists of a theoretical exposition of the method followed by a session of practical applications, where the student will get used to solve statistical problems encountered in daily practice.

Multivariate statistical analysis

The course is a general introduction to the descriptive methods and tests used in multivariate statistics, i.e. the study of several variables simultaneously. The course entails the following chapters:

- Short review of matrix calculus

- Graphical display of multivariate data

- Mean vector and dispersion matrix

- Principal component analysis

- Multiple regression and correlation

- Logistic and ordinal regressions

- Survival curves and Cox regression

- Discriminant analysis

Quality insurance, 2nd stage

Quality assurance systems ; accreditation bodies and audit procedure ; documentation ; quality manual ; standard operating procedures ; quality manager ; technique validation ; internal quality control ; internal audits ; corrective and preventive actions ; complaints ; specific goals in clinical laboratoires.

Course objective :
Biostatistics II, 2nd year

The course is intended to improve and enhance the use of biostatistics in health sciences, by insisting on statistical reasoning and problem solving rather than on the mathematics and the complexity of formula. Students should be able to carry out an in-depth statistical analysis of a dataset resulting from an experiment or a survey, in particular with respect to the thesis they will prepare later on in their cursus.

Multivariate statistical analysis

The course is an introduction to the methods of multivariate data analysis. At the end of the course, the sudent should be capable of defining a multivariate problem, analysing the data and interpreting the results. He/she should also be able to understand the use of multivariate methods in the scientific literature.

Quality insurance, 2nd stage

This course provides informations on quality assurance systems implementation and development in clinical laboratoires, on the ISO 17025 international standard for assay laboratories and on the ISO 15189 international standard, specific to the medical laboratoires.

Prerequisites :
Biostatistics II, 2nd year

Students should have received the course "Biostatistics I" or some equivalent statistical course.

Multivariate statistical analysis

A good knowledge of univarite statistical methods.

Workshops :
Biostatistics II, 2nd year

Total: 15 hours
In statistics, practice is most important. Students are therefore requested to attend the practicals. These will be scored and taken into account in the final score of the exam.
Practicals will start on Thursday 28 October 2010 at the Mathematic Institute, usually from 16h30 to 18h30. The last session will be on 16 December 2010.
Please take with you your lecture notes, exercise book, pocket calculator and a pad

Multivariate statistical analysis

The practical sessions consist in analysing mulltivariate datasets by means of the software package Statistica.

Quality insurance, 2nd stage

Pratical problems in quality management.

Organization :
Biostatistics II, 2nd year

The course will start on Thursday 28 October 2010 at 14h00 at the Auditorium 01 of the Mathematic Institute (Bldg B37, Pkg P32). In general, the course lasts until 16h30 with 10-15 break. The last course will be on 16 December 2010.

Multivariate statistical analysis

Each course consists of 1h30 of theory and 1h of exercises with Statistica. One lecture will be dedicated to Statistica (the corresponding manual has also to be acquired for 10 EUR). The homeworks can be completed at home by the student.

Quality insurance, 2nd stage

This course is given in the first four-month period.

Written notes :
Biostatistics II, 2nd year

Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Biostatistics, A. Albert, edition 2010" at Point de Vue shop near the large lecture halls at the cost of 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in biostatistics in subsequent years.
Textbook D.G. Altman. Practical statistics for medical research. Chapman & Hall, London, 2000.

Multivariate statistical analysis

Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Multivariate statistical analysis", A. Albert, edition 2008" at Pr Albert's office at CHU for 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in multivariate statistics in subsequent years, in particular for the final project.

Textbooks are:
- Multivariate statistical methods. D. Morrison, Mc Graw-Hill, Auckland, 1986
- Introduction to multivariate analysis. C. Chatfield et A.J. Collins, Chapman and Hall. ed, London, 1980

Quality insurance, 2nd stage

Documents (international standards and copies of standard operating procedures).

Assessment :

....

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

A written test will take place in January. Any score of 10 or more will be considered as a success, exempting the student from the examination in June or September. All exams are written exams and students can used their lectures notes or any other documents. Exams are scored 0-20.
