Course contents :  This course helps first year students to design and develop their dissertation project. The course takes place throughout the year with a session every two weeks. It is made up of two series of presentations. Firstly, there are general presentations on the different aspects of research methodology: what is a research field? What is a research issue? How to develop the theoretical framework within which the issues are placed? How to build a body of knowledge? What is an analysis? What is an hypothesis? Secondly, presentations which are closely linked to the pieces of work requested for each session will be developed in line with any difficulties encountered by students as they progress with their work.
Course objective :  General objectives: to acquire an effective and efficient way of working which can immediately be used in the end of year dissertation.
Specific objectives: at the end of the course, students will have built solid foundations for their research, set out in a 15 page "dissertation plan", upon which they can then build their end of year dissertation.
Prerequisites :  None.
Workshops :  The final piece of work consists of drafting a "dissertation plan", around 15 pages long, which serves as an examination. In order to meet the prescribed deadlines and depending on the formats required, preparatory work will be set at each course session and must be submitted at the following session. This work includes, for example: identifying a research field, bibliographical research, summary of reading, identifying an issue, building a body of knowledge, outlining a theoretical framework, etc.
Organization :  See http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires
Written notes :  No syllabus: compulsory note taking. "General remarks" relating to corrected pieces of work will be put on-line on MyULg.
Assessment :  Assessment is continuous. All prepared work is corrected by the teacher and will be the subject of an analytical commentary during class. The next piece of work will be designed on the basis of the results obtained and any difficulties encountered. The preliminary work is worth 40% of the grade. The final piece of work (the dissertation plan in the correct format) accounts for 60% of the grade.
