ARSL0408-1  Final thesis : "RECP"
Duration :
Credits/ECTS :
Master en architecture (Saint Luc), 1st yearToute l'année4
Holder(s) :  David Tieleman
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The thesis consists of a final, individual piece of work demonstrating the student's ability to define and treat a subject. The choice of subject is left to the student, who also chooses a supervisor from the Institute's teaching staff.
The field to be treated must relate to architecture in the broadest sense of the term, i.e. everything that touches upon the design and management of the lived-in space.
This work should not be confused with a piece of pure research: it does not aim to open a new theoretical avenue and should not address a domain which has not yet been explored. It should, however, demonstrate the ability to undertake critical analysis and must shed personal light upon the subject in question.
The thesis generally comprises around a hundred pages; it should be perfectly legible and must be stylistically coherent: it is also an exercise in coherent communication, both written, graphically and orally.
1st year of the masters:
Two progress stages (December and May):
Development of the thesis (methodology, bibliography, resource-persons, cases to be processed ...) monitored by the supervisor.
2nd year of the masters:
Submission of the finished work (January) to be presented in the first session.
Course objective :  This piece of work, which is at the end of most university and higher education teaching, should demonstrate the student's ability to define and study a subject. It exists within a legal framework which stipulates that it must consist of at least thirty pages (of 1,500 characters). However, often a more substantial piece of work is required. In architecture, a thesis generally consists of between sixty and a hundred pages.
The originality of the document - which is not a determining factor - can occur through comparing documents which at first sight do not appear similar. The thesis must be perfectly legible and should be stylistically coherent (during drafting, students should consult the document "Petit aide-mémoire" by Xavier Folville - October 1993 - in order to resolve the different problems of annotating references such as bibliographical references, sources, notes and quotations).
Organization :  The thesis co-ordinator is primarily involved at the start of the research (suggesting research avenues, pieces of research or resource-persons, contributing to contextualising the research...) and participates in its assessment (organisation of juries).
Teaching staff will participate in specific seminars, for example: research methodology, written and verbal communication...
Personal support for each piece of work is provided by the supervisors.
The joint-supervision of theses by co-supervisors who are external to the Institut Supérieur d'Architecture, to be chosen in terms of the particularities of each approach, is to be encouraged.
Written notes :  Rules for the drafting of theses, entitled "Réglement des Mémoires" will be given to all students.
This document sets out the framework for beginning a thesis, the ways in which it is supervised and assessed, methodological considerations etc...
It also describes all the practical modalities relating to this piece of work.
Assessment :  Assessment conditions will depend on the type of research developed (project-thesis, thesis jointly supervised by external partners ...).
