| Course contents : | Attempt to understand the evolution of towns and the related challenges.
Tackling the concepts of land management and town planning.
Knowledge of the main instruments and methods of town planning and development in Wallonia and in the neighbouring regions.
1. Introduction:
I. modes of production in the urbanised environment: problems, forecasts, challenges, implications for the architect.
2. The evolution of the town as we know it and attempts to define land management and town planning.
- An analytical approach to the ways in which towns are formed and how they evolve.
- The challenges posed by natural heritage and the built and non-built landscape.
- The challenges of sustainable territorial development.
- The professions, methods and tools used in town planning and development.
3. Current trends in town planning and planology.
- Main trends in town planning and contemporary land development.
- Town planning, the environment, development: macro-, mezzo- and micro-territorial scales of intervention for an architect.
- Strategic objectives and their implementation on the regional, communal and local scale, particularly in terms of structuring space, sustainable responses to basic needs, accessibility management and mobility, and protecting resources.
- Analysis of the main planning, regulation and evaluation instruments in the Walloon region.
4. Some intervention case studies: analytical, design and creation steps.

| Course objective : |
- To understand the ways in which the urban environment is formed and in which it evolves, and to introduce the steps for intervening in town planning and land development.
- To highlight the role of trends in ideological thought and socio-economic and environmental factors upon the evolution, design and transformation of urban space.
- To highlight the role of the architect among all other actors in the town planning environment within the overall context of land use management and town planning in terms of the constructed and non-constructed environment.

| Assessment : | At the end of the term, in the form of a written exam.
The assessment will focus on the theoretical knowledge developed during class as well as on the ability to reflect on the subject of town planning and land use management in practical situations. |
