Course contents :  Architecture of the 20th Century: from 1940 to 2000 The period under study extends from the aftermath of the Second World War to the end of the 20th century.
Nine chapters will focus on the state of architecture after the events of the Second World War, the shock of the 60s and its consequences in terms of the various forms of architectural response.
Introduction I. "War damage" II. Use and criticism of the icons of modern architecture III. The pop years IV. Shape and models revisited V. Controversial extensions VI. Deconstructivism VII. Postmodernism viii; Minimalism IX. The uncertainties of the end of the century Conclusions: 1940-2000
Course objective :  Explaining the effects caused by the defeat of the fascist powers. Explaining the 1960s and showing how rebellion created different directions in the following decades.
Presenting the subsequent chain of events, detecting breaks in the chain. To perceive architectural works and accompanying publications as establishing a specific question. To show how space gradually distinguished itself from architecture. To develop a critical approach through the comparative reading of publications.
Prerequisites :  Knowledge of the course "History of Architecture of the 20th Century: from the beginning until 1939".
Curiosity and interest in the question of the representation of man and its translation into artistic and architectural expression.
Organization :  Comparing different trends of expression in the 20th Century (painting, music, literature, cinema, architecture and furniture).
Reading texts and specific cases.
Lectures with IT material - images, films -, based on texts and plans given in advance; this material completes the syllabus.
During the class, students will participate in the analysis of documents.

Assessment :  Test of understanding during the fourth term. At the end of the period, written exam:
  • reproducing knowledge: recognise projects, their authors and the context in which they were produced;
  • using acquired information: comparing different trends and modes of expression (painting, music, literature, cinema, architecture);
  • appropriating information:critical reading of the period under study.
