| Course contents : | THE TOWN AND THE LOGISTICS OF ITS ORGANISATION
Ways of approaching the town: the concept of a mental map - mental and symbolic representation - the concept of diagrams.
The basic needs of the individual in terms of organisation of the town: Introduction to the concepts of readability - identity and habitability.
The town as the result of a process of historical evolution: the town as a collection of lines and signs from the past, the town as a process of continuous evolution - different periods of urbanisation, the reasons for them and the characteristics of the urban fabric which they produced - conclusion: development of the concept of integration.
Attempt to define and characterise the town: morphological, political, administrative, social, and economic characteristics - characteristics of diversity, density and continuity, the basic components - conclusion: the town as a complex ensemble - definition and specificity of the urban space
The main challenges of the town today and the main theories of the town of the future.
METHODOLOGY OF THE URBAN PROJECT AND CONCEPTS OF SPATIAL PLANNING
Definition of the urban project and the outline sketches - approach to design - communication tools.
The context of spatial planning and its processes - the main means of action (direct and indirect). |

- An introduction to understanding the environment and urban space in its complex dimension.
- To raise awareness of the impact of "architectural" acts upon the urban balance.
- To provide basic theoretical elements allowing students, in the context of the architecture and town planning project workshops, to design projects integrating and reacting to the urban context.
