ARLL0307-1  Sociology and urban sociology
Duration :  24h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelier en architecture (Lambert Lombard), 3rd yearToute l'année2
Holder(s) :  Stéphane Dawans
Language :  French language
Course contents :  This 30 hour course does not attempt to provide students with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject, but rather to provide them with the necessary tools to become architects who are able to take on their role as agents in a social setting. This is why, after having presented the main outline of sociology, its particularities in terms of the social sciences, its objectives and methods, we will attempt to show how these elements can be used to study urban life - that moment when the town transforms itself in order to move progressively from an urbanisation regime to a metropolisation regime. This leads us to see the main research themes of urban sociology and the perspectives which appear to stem from its analysis.
Course objective :  By the end of the course, students should, for example, be able to respond to questions relating to:
  • Understanding of basic concepts and methods in sociology,
  • Understanding of the main questions in urban sociology, ...
Prerequisites :  Knowledge acquired during the courses on Forms and Sites, Theory, Town Planning and Social Sciences.
Organization :  Lectures - including question and answer sessions. The course will be illustrated with texts as well as by Powerpoint slides and films.
Written notes :  Students may find it useful to refer to De Coster Michel, Introduction à la sociologie, Brussels, De Boeck University, 2001 and to Clavel Maïte, Sociologie de l'urbain, Paris, Anthropos, 2004.
Assessment :  Written exam
