| Course contents : | As an essential component of our civilisation, rationality has its own story to tell. Because Belgian studies do not study philosophy in secondary school, the thirty introductory hours will allow us better outline the major stages. In this course which runs from the pre-Socratic philosophers through to Foucault, we will take snapshots of a few broad periods and a few major figures. The aim is to highlight the things that underlie our way of thinking about the world in "Western" terms and to shed light on the concepts and problems which are necessary pre-requisites to courses on aesthetics and social sciences given in later years. This knowledge will also be indispensable to understand architecture as a critical and responsible citizen. |
 |
| Course objective : | By the end of the course, students should be able to respond to questions relating to the specificity of a particular period in the history of philosophy, the contribution which various schools of thought or major philosophies had, the meaning of a concept, the interpretation to be given to an extract of text ... They will also be able to make cross-references between different parts of the course. |
