| Course contents : | The course consists:
* of a theoretical part : refinement of the public realm concept and description of the evolution of the uses, analysis of the contemporary practices of refurbishment under duress of determining factors :
1 Mobility and accessibility
2 Safety and security
3 The quality of the natural environment
4 The urban merchandising
* of a practical part : from concrete study cases, conceive and size the refurbishment of various urban public places, elaborate documents in the classic frame of a public contract of services. |

| Course objective : | Summarized contents :
· Chap. 1: History of the concepts and practices of the public realm
· Chap. 2: Mobility, accessibility and public realm
· Chap. 3: Safety and security of the public realm
· Chap. 4: Natural frame and public place
· Chap. 5: Privatisation and Merchandising of the public realm
The course intends to:
· A better understanding of the contemporary notion of urban public realm ;
· Analyze the practices guiding the development and refurbishment of such spaces in the western societies (Europe, the USA);
· Find out about principles of conception and guides for the implementation of such spaces;
· Get acquainted with the procedures and the actors contributing to the implementation of an urban public realm project. |

| Prerequisites : | Basic principles about urban design, use of the usual tools for conception, design and presentation of projects. |
 |
| Workshops : | Exercises are supported by the observation of concrete examples in Belgium and abroad.
Practical class is organized according to a logic of increasing complexity to bring the student to a gradual awareness of the problems. According to the level of complexity, the exercises will be made individually or by group.
From concrete cases and generally in association with the authorities in charge of the development, the projects intend to familiarize the student with :
- The administrative environment : notions of public contract of services and of works, technical specifications, elaboration of documents according to the nature of the contract, management of the relationships with the public authorities (permits, subsidies, ...);
- The sensitive approach of the conception and the design of the urban public realm;
- The elaboration of technical documents of development or refurbishment of the public realm. |

| Organization : | First semester, on Tuesday morning from 8:30 am till 12:30 am |

| Written notes : | The lecture notes are available by the teacher. |

| Assessment : | Oral exam + assessment of the exercices. |
