| Course contents : | Workshop training to provide students with knowledge about architecture not necessarily based on rules, norms, or doctrines of composition, but indeed on representative concepts that will allow students to master and structure the complexity of reality. The concept is at one and the same time an instrument of analysis and a functioning part of project planning.
Workshops in architecture should at first concentrate on developing students' ability to "know how to think". B. DONNADIEU and D. SPINETTA call this "learning how to look." As these authors indicate, this is a matter of "... showing, through numerous examples, on different scales and with regard to different functions, that architectural objects, furnishings, spaces and volumes can be analyzed and divided into articulated sub-groupings..."
The student will thus learn to hierarchize his or her thinking, and upon this basis to simplify action in order to respond in a pertinent manner to a specific request. Students will thus develop the savoir-faire required for the act of composition.
Workshops will be given in four program years. Themes covered will feature spatial scales and degrees of constraint that gradually become more difficult to handle. |

| Course objective : | By means of a series of preliminary exercises, the course objective is to lead students to "think" a problem globally as a function of defined parameters and to find a solution to this problem that is significant and coherent from a site based, contextual, organizational, formal, and structural point of view, in other words, to "manage" complexity.
The final exercise consists in the elaboration of a "major project" must allow the student to demonstrate a synthesis of knowledge and concepts acquired in previous years' courses, and this synthesis should cover architectural and technical areas (the "engineering" of building) as well as socio-cultural and human dimensions in equal measure. |

| Prerequisites : | Having completed courses required in the years of the bachelor's program and in the first year of the Master program, "civil engineer architect" or the equivalent. |

| Workshops : | Extends over the entire academic year.
Practical work sessions are held in the architecture workshop room of building B-52 at Sart-Tilman.
Field visits and specific informational seminars accompany the process of "project planning": elaboration of a program, preliminary structural design and HVAC, information about regulations and norms...
An architectural study trip several days long (open to students in five program years) is organized before Easter. This trip is a privileged opportunity to see, live, and feel architecture, discussing with students and with workshop supervisors. |

| Written notes : | Reference works related to themes covered in the course are recommended for students. |
|
| Assessment : | Grading is based on exercises completed during the academic year and on the presentation before a jury of a "major project". |
