| Course contents : | This course will sketch out a number of important elements in architectural production in the broadest sense of the term, and in particular will introduce students to the bases of composition of architectural spaces. The course prepares students for work in the composition workshops that are held during the four following years of their studies. The course is structured in accordance with three themes: - the analysis of existing architectural productions, which gives students directions for reflection that will enrich their architectural culture and inform their ability to analyze critically. - practical exercises oriented towards "projects" (case studies), which gives students the opportunity to develop their own processes of project planning, and stimulate their creative autonomy. - experimentation with graphics tools that allow students to develop their personal sensibility as regards communication of their ideas, by accentuating the learning process that they undergo with regard to free drawing, which remains an essential tool of the architect, for both speculative and descriptive purposes. |
| Course objective : |
- to learn the vocabulary and the basic grammar of architectonic composition in order to acquire tools necessary for analysis, and then for the production of architectural spaces
- to improve one's ability to look, to observe, to stimulate vision in space, the meaning of perspective, the scale of proportions, three-dimensional vision
- to develop the student's personal sensibility through formal procedures supported by analysis and synthesis, grounded in the spirit of research, knowledge, and sensible transposition
- to learn to express oneself, to go from an idea toward its realization, to verify one's thinking by means of its material realization and to transmit it to others
| Prerequisites : | No prerequisites except a modicum of curiosity ... |
| Workshops : | Practical work sessions will be held in the architecture workshop room in building B52 at Sart-Tilman. |
| Organization : | Year-round. Courses are given in the form of theoretical expositions, open discussions and practical work during which students are led to compose and to analyze architectural spaces for the first time. Proactive participation by students in practical work sessions is indispensable. Visits to various buildings are organized during the year (two or three visits per year). |

| Written notes : | Reference works COMPOSITION - « Architecture : Form, Space and Order », by Francis D. K. CHING - basic grammar and vocabulary for architectonic composition - « L'espace vivant » by Jean COUSIN - introduction to perceptual phenomena encountered in the architectural environment. GRAPHIC EXPRESSION - « Architectural Graphics » by Francis D. K. CHING - illustrated introduction to elementary conventions of communication of architecture projects - « Dessin de design architectural » by Francis D. K. CHING & P. JUROSEZK- illustration of principal tools and methods of drawing in the process of conception - « Le dessin d'architecture à main levée » by YANES & DOMINGUEZ - illustration of the principal tools and methods of conceptual and representational drawing - « Ombres et Lumières » by Jean-Paul JUNGMANN - tracing and rendering manual that considers architecture as an optical machine - « Basics - Maquettes d'architecture » by Alexander SCHILLING - illustration of principal tools and methods for making architectural models Reading journals on architecture is also an essential element in students' acquisition of pedagogical objectives, the same as their participation in field trips, conferences or expositions on architecture. |
| Assessment : | Grading in this course will be based on: * work turned in during the year * oral examination at the end of the year The second session cancel out the grade from the first session. Students will have a chance to redo exercises for which they did not receive a grade of at least 10/20.
Examination format
The oral examination will cover on one hand the graphic and oral presentation of a project elaborated during the final class meetings, which will also be the object of an open discussion, based on graphic documentation presented to the student (blueprints, photographs), so as to verify students' involvement with regard to the course objectives: : * mastery of basic principles of composition: (re) cognition of principles set forth in the book Architecture: Form, Space & Order by F. D.K. Ching * critical approach to various themes covered in the class during the year * critical evaluation of one's own work turned in during the year |
